For 12 years this Sexy Lady has been giving CHICANOS much love....
It’s taken over 20 years for Latinos, especially Chicano and Mexican Rappers to get recognized as a legitimate force in Hip Hop. Yea, there have been artists doing their thing for a long time, Mellow Man Ace, Kid Frost, Cypress Hill, Lighter Shade of Brown, Big Pun, Fat Joe, Lil Rob, and Baby Bash have all broken out into the Mainstream from the underground. Now what about the ones you don’t know, especially in Dallas. Acts Like Diamonique, Angie B, Lyrical Locos, Quota, Psycho Realm, Capone, Mr. Capone-E, Spanish Fly, Aztlan Underground, Rhyme Poetic Mafia, Brown Town Looters, Rocky Padilla, Slow Pain and numerous other acts from California, Colorado and other parts of Texas.
Well, thanks to a Jewish Lady, who was born in New Mexico, your gonna finally get a chance to hear the underground that has spawned SPM, Dope House Records, Hi Power Music, Twin Berettaz, Abusivo, Malverde, Akwid, Mexiclan, David Rolas, and other Chicano/Mexicano rappers from Cali to Florida. For the past Twelve years Power 10 in LA has been one of the hottest stations in the country and that is where Khool Aid has been doing her thing.
The Poco Pero Locos show has been in syndication for 12 years now in over 40 markets like Denver, San Antonio, Houston, Phoenix, LA, and San Diego. The show has been giving a voice to the Chicano Underground Rap scene first from Califas but as new markets picked up the show they received music from those underground scenes.
Pocos Pero Locos was the show that first gave love to SPM, Chingo Bling, Dallas Dymond Life, Play N Skillz, and other Texas Rappers. Khool Aid and E-Dub receive good music and not so good music but they know that if nobody hears the music nobody can get better at making the music.
I talked to Khool Aid this week and wanted to make sure Dallas gives her as much love as San Antonio and Houston have been giving her.
Synbad: Sup Ma, when did you first decide you were gonna be a DJ?
Khool Aid: I knew since I was in Junior High and I had pictures of all my favorite DJ's posted in my locker. I knew not only did I want to be a DJ, but I wanted to be a DJ on Power 106 in Los Angeles.
Synbad: So where did you begin your career?
Khool Aid: I started off in college radio in the San Fernando Valley in Cali. Rocked the mic for a radio station in Oxnard, CA and went to Fresno to rock morning radio. I got mad home sick and decided if I don't make it in L.A. I'm not gonna do the radio thing. I came home on a mission to make it and with the blessing of the man upstairs the doors opened up for me.
Synbad: How did Pocos Pero Locos get started?
Khool Aid: Being in radio I was always told to target the Latinos, and it always bothered me that Latinos didn't have a present voice in Hip Hop radio. I was already a fan of Artists like Lil Rob, Spanish Fly, Psycho Realm, and numerous other artists. As corny as it sounds I woke up one morning and told E-Dub that I had a dream that I was doing an all Latin Hip Hop radio show. I went and gathered all my Latin Hip Hop CD's and approached my boss radio God Jimmy Steal with the idea, he loved it, and the first PPL show was launched shortly thereafter. I was mad scared about how the people would receive it. I couldn't believe it hadn't already been done.
After the first show aired I realized how big what we were doing was. The people received it with more than open arms. The show did so well in L.A. the E-Dub and I decided we wanted to spread the voice. With the help of Jo Lopez from Upstairs Records she introduced us to J.D. Gonzalez who at the time was a Program Director in San Antonio, TX. He believed in the vision and Pocos Pero Locos and the Network was officially launched. The national voice of the Latino street community finally had its platform.
Synbad: So I have to ask you, is Reggaeton a fad?
Khool Aid: Absolutely not! Reggaeton is one of the sub-genres of Latin Hip Hop, which ultimately IS Hip Hop. The majority of the artists are cats from the streets who are telling their stories, their way. Lyrically whether it's a Reggaeton track or the hardest hitting beat, Tego, Voltio, and Don Omar, are some of the sickest fuck’n lyricist on the planet!!

Synbad: I have been picking some of the artists to watch for in the ’06, who you do think everybody to watch for?
Khool Aid: Wwwhooooo, Ese Daz from Spanish Fly- cat's doing the damn thing. Lucky Luciano- fool is sick. Calle Trece- reppin Puerto Rico, R. Joel Ortiz and Thurston Howell outta N.Y. and of course some of my favs Lil Rob, Tego, Cuban Link, Chingo Bling, Voltio....shit I could go on forever...somos Pocos Pero Locos...2006 Homie!!!
I have to personally thank Khool Aid cuz she has given Chicano and Mexican rappers much love and she actually helped me find out about groups like Proper Dos, Delinquent Habits, Aztlan Underground and so many other groups that have been doing their thing since the late 80’s and early 90’s. So make sure you check her out every Sunday on 106.7 and if you want more info on Pocos Pero Locos Click on the Banner!!!
